E-mail training is an absolute must. It's beyond me why this isn't something the high schools have picked up on. EVERYBODY needs to send e-mail as part of their job. It really doesn't matter where your career takes you -- you'll need to be able to send e-mail. But it's still not something educators take seriously. (I suppose it is a little bit true that teaching is actually one of the few professions where you DON'T have to send e-mails. Hmm...)

Being make-do tech support does definitely provide job security -- especially when you end up learning everyone's e-mail passwords because of it (hah!) -- but at the same time it kind of wears out its welcome and can limit Gen Y employees when it comes to moving up in their jobs. "Better not send Matt out to that meeting -- he'll need to be here in case Mary has a problem with her PowerPoint!"

Thanks for reading, Holly. I hope you check back again!

I have a coworker who deletes NOTHING from her inbox. Our IT department has to come and tell her to delete e-mails because she is over capacity. She has the fifth highest capacity in the company, and she's not in a senior position. Cracks me up.

Yes, absolutely, why isn't there an e-mail training system? Or, at the very least, a Best Practices white sheet for larger companies? Part of me does love being the go-to gal for anything vaguely technical in the computers and programs department. Need Excel help? Ask Holly. I don't know how to do [insert simple Office-based program task]. Ask Holly. It gives you a sense of job security in an uncertain market.
